The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Key Part in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chief selector the selector has declared that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on 21 November in the WACA.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about his chances of being involved.

"We know that time is getting short and various factors at play, not just the back issue, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he will feature a key capacity. Hopefully it's the first Test. If not, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India last month after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of spinal problems, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of several home seasons in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to make the squad for the series.

Bailey noted that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches in any case. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for a short period, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
