Matteo Cancellieri Shows Flashing Moments of Exceptional Talent in Positive Aspect for Unstable Lazio

The mood at Lazio's home ground was far from happy on Saturday afternoon. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, an opponent that had allowed 10 goals while scoring only two in their previous five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were finishing their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with chairman Claudio Lotito.

A Season Unraveling?

Was Lazio's season coming unstitched, or had there never been any cohesion maintaining its structure to start with? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as manager this summer, but then he admitted that the management had not mentioned a ban on new signings they were about to receive for fiscal problems. Rumours that he could resign were not true, but he stated that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Roman club were just as chaotic on the pitch as behind the scenes, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing their other initial five matches, including the Rome derby. From one game to the next, observers have struggled to tell if progress is being made or collapsing.

The Youngster's Unforeseen Return

At least one man continued to smile through it. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to remain with Lazio during this campaign. He spent the previous campaign with Parma on loan and, at the start of the off-season, his parent club were pushing for him to extend his stay for another season. The transfer ban led to a change of plans. The club couldn't risk to reduce their roster without replacements.

He signed in the first place during Sarri's previous tenure, then a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He made 20 Serie A appearances in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those as a substitute. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who left following that term, would later accuse Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri would be a star but then not selecting him."

Discovering His Natural Fit

It's possible the coach was still trying to determine the nature of his skill set. Billed as a flank player on arrival, Cancellieri yet was deployed for most of that campaign as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile at No 9. During 63 outings on loan at Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
