British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just above the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of entry passages down to the site... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces participating in this mission for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among thousands of UK service members deployed over the festive period. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the US military conducted what it termed a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an ambush killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
