The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.
The ex-president was sentenced of plotting a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than a 27-year term in prison, but he was staying under confinement pending appeals.
High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after recent developments were revealed.
This encompassed trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a summons to a public vigil that could enable a chance to flee".
Judicial Records Show Flight Fears
In a paperwork permitting the arrest, Justice Moraes said information from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the tracking monitor to ensure success in his getaway".
This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.
His offspring, his son Flávio, who serves as a legislator, called for a gathering of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or see it all from your smartphone there on your couch? I urge you to struggle with us."
He said the gathering would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the possibility of the former president's "relocation to embassies near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of planning to request asylum through a consular facility", a announcement said.
The legal document underscores that the US embassy in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.
International Reactions
The former president's legal troubles have provoked anger from fellow conservative nationalist United States President Trump, causing him to implement a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.
Bolsonaro is being held in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will have a detention review on the next day.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with tracking devices.
They also asked that the former president be allowed to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he required frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.
Details of Guilty Verdict
Bolsonaro was convicted of leading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Top judicial officials said that he knew of a scheme which involved plans to murder Lula and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.
The conspiracy was prevented because it didn't receive the endorsement of the military leaders. His successor was took office without issue on 1 January 2023.
But a seven days after, on 8 January, numerous his backers stormed and vandalised official structures in the national capital, the capital city.
The law enforcement took action and around 1,500 people were arrested.
The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, restore order and reinstate his authority.
At the period, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.
He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The one-time head of state called the trial a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the 2026 national vote.
