EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
