Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by skipper Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in several interviews following his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes against the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain stated he had let his message to "drift around" within the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

However, after Crawley scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "weak men" comment after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards went on a holiday to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Before this match, Stokes said his team had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's dismissal on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435.

This means, the home team require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

Defeat will extend the English team's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of play – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was inevitably hard coming here against them. They were the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate future in the side, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, extending his poor record against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any notion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is noise externally. There is no discussion of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
